MO Catholic Conference Update

MCC Weekly Update Friday, May 5th

It’s been a crazy week in the legislature, and work may not end until late Friday. Legislators are supposed to finalize the proposed state budget forfiscal year 2018 and send it to Gov. Greitens’ desk by the end of tomorrow’s session. However, there are many personal conflicts in the MO Senate that may stall the budget, and therefore require it to be considered in a special session after the regular session.

Things have gotten so dysfunctional in the Senate that senators Bob Dixon (R-Springfield) and Kiki Curls (D-Kansas City) stood on the Senate floor this week and sang Kumbaya as they pleaded for their colleagues to start working together to serve the citizens of Missouri. Senator Dixon said, “We need a visitation; we need some help.”

Here are some articles from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and the Kansas City Star that give you some more information about this week’s struggles in the Senate.

Although the proposed state budget must be sent to the Governor by the end of tomorrow, non-budget legislation can be considered next week. The MCC continues to push for the passage of legislation that will stop the creation of abortion sanctuaries. This legislation is also in jeopardy because of the infighting in the Senate. The session ends Friday, May 12. Stay tuned for more, and please respond to this Action Alert to contact your senator about passing pro-life legislation if you have not done so already.
